Hoary Vervain, or Verbena stricta, is a striking perennial that reaches 24 to 48 inches in height. It is known for its tall spikes of purple flowers that bloom from July to September. Thriving in full sun, it prefers dry to medium moisture levels in loamy or sandy soils. This plant not only serves as a great source of nectar for butterflies and bees, but its seeds also provide food for small animals and birds. As a larval host for the Common Buckeye caterpillar, it is an excellent choice for ecological gardens. Although short-lived, Hoary Vervain self-seeds effectively, making it a resilient addition to perennial borders and prairie gardens.
